Summer Ocean Salmon

King Salmon

Columbia River & Tillamook Bay in Garibaldi

Nehalem Bay and above Astoria on the Columbia River

From the end of June through early August is my summer kings and ocean salmon season.

For ocean salmon I fish off the mouth of the Columbia River and out of Tillamook Bay in Garibaldi. On these trips we are catching both kings and coho. These are very fun trips with lots of action, it’s not uncommon to have many days where we can limit out in a few hours. The action can be flat out nonstop once you find the fish. If you like to be out on the ocean with high-paced fishing this is the fishery for you!

As for summer kings, I fish in Nehalem Bay and above Astoria on the Columbia River. Summer kings are a fantastic eating fish, they’re just under a spring salmon when it comes to oil content. I normally target these fish on days when conditions don’t allow ocean fishing or if you’re not one that likes to be in the ocean. This is not the high paced fast action fishing you would see in the ocean, you got to put your time in and it normally pays off with these fine eating fish.

Ocean conditions are a large factor in deciding where to fish, and I always try to chose whatever location is fishing best during this time of year.
